Peter has been attending the Brisbane Outsider Artists' workshops for the past four years. He has been involved in a range of workshops including painting, drawing, drumming as well as music and movement workshops.
Art is simply a part of Peter's everyday life, as is Cerebral Palsy and a mild intellectual disability. He has never made an issue of the fact that he paints or draws. He just does it. It is difficult for me to say whether or not his disability affects his art. Disability has never featured in his art in any way.
Peter has grown up in a creative environment and has been exposed to art in most forms. While he has always enjoyed drawing, it wasn't until he joined Access Arts about four years ago that he began to explore for himself the arts in different forms. He has enjoyed painting since he first tried it and continues to have a list of ideas he wants to work on.
I see his art as another important communication tool with which to express himself. Peter's ability to communicate in other ways has developed quite markedly since his involvement in the arts. This transformation in his communication has allowed him to express his thoughts and feelings more easily to others, which has given people the opportunity to interact more easily with him. This process further assists Peter's communication and growth.
We change and experience change throughout our lives and can remain virtually untouched by it, however an experience can transform us and when it does it touches our soul and lights up our world.
