Creative Community Celebration

The Creative Community Celebration held on Saturday 12th July at the Currumbin Community School Farm was an absolute success. The afternoon gave the Crossing Divides team, participants, families, friends and the creative community of Currumbin an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the young artists involved in the workshops.

‘It was absolutely electric- The energy from the participants.. the warmth generated by everybody involved and the sense of community – I loved it.’
Karen Roberts (Access Arts – Membership Services)

‘I really enjoyed the day. It was a great atmosphere and now we know we can do it……we can do it even better next time. The whole band was so passionate about performing and we sold out of all of our CD's’
Ben Tew ( The Black Mamba)

‘I really liked it as it made me feel like I was part of a real band’
Jesse Patterson (The Black Mamba)

And a real band they were, stealing the limelight at the end of the afternoon. The Black Mamba had the audience dancing and singing along and lining up to buy their first CD (which sold out).

You can see their YouTube clip at www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiqQ20_s21Y

Thank you to the farm for the beautiful space and to all those who made it such a special day.

Crossing Divides was invited by the Gold Coast City Council to facilitate workshops during the community event.

  • Mark Warne and his fantastic creative team had the kiln working overtime creating beautiful scales for the community sculpture ‘ FISH’ that will be entered into SWELL Sculpture Festival in September. Everyone – young and old had a great time decorating their copper scale with enamel and they were delighted to see their piece come out of the kiln shining and glittering like a true fish scale. Everyone who contributed to the sculpture was invited to the SWELL sculpture festival to see their scale on the finished sculpture.
  • Kandy, Heather and Jess had a beautiful day assisting people in decorating their flags with paint, glitter, feathers and flair. All the finished flags flying in the sunny afternoon breeze looked an absolute treat.
  • Painting wooden geckos was also a hit and there were some proud young artists taking their work home with a smile.
  • WoW - What a wonderful community day.

All Abilities Playground

Gold Coast City Council and Disability Services Queensland are constructing a special 'All Abilities Playground' at Kurrawa Pratten Park, Broadbeach.

The playground will provide access for all children to experience fun, interactive and challenging play, while their families and carers watch over them in an enjoyable and relaxing environment. The playground will be purpose-designed to reflect community needs and include sensory, motor, imagination and educational aspects of play.

Council is seeking input from potential playground users, particularly children with disabilities and their families and carers, to be involved in the playground’s design, development and construction.

Why an all abilities playground?

  • Socially responsive to the needs of all children and families in the community.
  • Enable children with disabilities to play outdoors, side by side with their friends and siblings.
  • Provide an opportunity for parents and carers to watch over their children in an enjoyable and relaxing environment.
  • A safe and free community asset enhancing health, wellbeing and learning for all children.

Have your say:

Council encourage children, families, carers, teachers and service providers to provide input in the design of the playground. Have your say by attending one of the Community Consultations listed below or by completing the survey link below. The consultation closes on 31 July 2008.
