After the immense success of Brisbane Festival 08: Under The Radar, Brisbane Festival 2009 is putting the call out for applications for the 2009 event.
A 16 day theatrefest within a festival, Brisbane Festival 09: Under The Radar celebrates the creation of new work, taking risks, self discovery and pushing the boundaries!
From Friday 18 September to Saturday 3 October BF09: Under The Radar will take over Brisbane's Metro Arts building for the third time, aiming the spotlight at young and emerging theatre artists who operate under the radar of the mainstream.
This year we will also move beyond theatre, taking BF09: Under The Radar and all its quirky splendour to the masses on the streets of Brisbane's CBD. For the first time street theatre will be included in the programme with an estimated 10 shows being staged in shop fronts, vacant retail premises and on the streets over 2 weeks.
BF09: Under The Radar is now calling for applications from artists and companies with brave, stimulating, relevant and innovative shows that the world needs to see. We're looking for fresh ideas and the crossing of art forms. We're after stories that explore the big questions or transform the everyday and mundane. It has to be new - the rest is up to you. Surprise us!
We are seeking new works in the following areas:
plays| burlesque| physical theatre| street theatre| theatre of image| dance theatre| musical theatre| cabaret| junkyard | circus | public performance - all welcome to apply.
Successful BF09: Under The Radar applicants will receive 100% of box office takings for a season of 4-5 shows, venue and technical hire, production and marketing support from the festival to get their show up and out there plus an awesome chance to expand their creative networks, hook up with like minded artists and arts workers and share a platform with some of the world's best productions.
Applications must be received by 6pm (EST) Monday 16 February 2009.
A selection committee of Australia's arts industry practitioners from various art forms will then consider each application. The committee will meet in Brisbane in early 2009 to determine which productions will feature in BF09: Under The Radar. Successful applications will be notified in April 2009.
Through BF09: Under The Radar, Brisbane Festival aims to give a leg up to artists and companies on the edge of the mainstream.
BF09 Artistic Director and CEO Lyndon Terracini said 'Everyone has to start somewhere. Anyone who works in the arts has been there and knows how hard it is to get a break. BF09: Under The Radar is our way of fostering the next generation of performers.'

The Hon Peter Garrett MP
Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts
The Rudd Government has delivered on its commitments and strengthened its support for Australia’s arts and cultural sector with an investment of $62.3 million in the 2009-10 Federal Budget.
Arts Minister Peter Garrett today announced new programs to support artists, increase access and promotion of the arts, and maintain support for existing programs.
“This budget recognises the critical role the arts play in nourishing our community and supporting employment particularly during difficult economic times,” Mr Garrett said.
“The Government has delivered on a number of election commitments in this budget, including boosting support for Australia’s Indigenous artists — a key source of Indigenous employment - and developing opportunities for young and emerging artists to build sustainable careers.
“New funding of $9.3 million will be delivered through the National Arts and Crafts Industry Support (NACIS) program to assist the sustainability of the Indigenous art sector, and $600,000 will help fund the implementation of an industry code of conduct.
“Funding will be directed to Indigenous art centres — a vital source of Indigenous jobs - and will support the implementation of an Indigenous Australian Art Commercial Code of Conduct which will, for the first time, set agreed industry standards for ethical and transparent commerce.
“The Australian Government will support young and emerging artists through the new $9.6 million ArtStart program, which offers one-off grants to help graduates start a business as professional artists.
“Many emerging artists are forced to rely on their own resources and part-time jobs to subsidise their careers,” Mr Garrett said.
“ArtStart will respond to artists’ needs through a competitive grants process that promotes and rewards artistic excellence.”
The first grant round will be advertised in late 2009.
“The budget also continues the Government’s longstanding commitment to world-class performing arts training organisations and to providing opportunities for young and emerging artists.
“Funding will assist the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) to attract and retain specialist teachers, secure the Australian Youth Orchestra’s world-class training and international touring programs and meet costs associated with the Australian Ballet School’s recent refurbishment.
