Editorial- August 2007
Greetings Members
Well it's Ekka time again and although Access Arts News doesn't come with any showbags, Dagwood Dogs or fairy floss, we still have a treasure trove of goodies for you to read at no cost (unlike the Ekka!).
This month we feature a report from the Caboolture Sound Circles group about their facilitator training weekend and the outcomes of the Queensland Community Foundation's inaugural general fund grant round. There's also a call out to members to perform at the next Sunset Sounds and for workshop proposals for next year's program. Both are fantastic opportunities for members to promote their incredible skills in the arts.
On the Quality Assurance side of things we highlight possibly the most important policy for members to know about, the Membership Policy. Please also take note of the handout that came with your newsletter as it asks for members' involvement in a focus group as part of Access Arts' audit against the Queensland Disability Service Standards.
In the Member's Corner, there's a member profile from office regular Ted Herrmann, a touching song from Lyn Flanagan and a hilarious piece of writing by Taz! Heard.
And finally, there truly is a plethora of workshops, exhibitions, festivals and events happening around the state (and beyond!) this month so be sure to check out the bulging What's On section. (Please take extra note of the vocal workshop to be facilitated by one of the influences that inspired Sound Circles, Frankie Armstrong!)
Until next time, Keep creating!

Sound Circles Weekend 14th And 15th July 2007
Report from Caboolture Participants.
On the 14th and 15th of July Brisbane Sound Circles facilitators Emma Bennison and Sally Josephson, along with Sunshine Coast facilitator Majella Jacobson, joined the Sound Circles group from Caboolture Centacare in a whirlwind weekend of Sound Circles skills development. The weekend was a huge hit with everyone expanding their creative skills, learning from each other and exploring sound, movement, percussion and more! Facilitators were inspired by the Caboolture group's ability to work together and respect everyone's unique contributions. Below are some of the participant's thoughts on the weekend:
Aaron: Good weekend. I worked hard. I learnt a lot. Liked doing the video recording. I liked doing the rainbow sound circle. Good catching up with Emma and Majella.
Sean: Best things for me were the stories. I liked doing the first day at school especially when Chia got into trouble. Loved meeting Emma, Sally and Majella. I liked the drum kit. It was fun.
Becky: I liked the weekend. I liked everybody joining in with the group. I liked using the video cameras, I was good at that. Loved catching up with Emma and Majella. Majella was blind!!! I liked the place where we did it the hall. It was nice.
Narelle: The hall was nice. I enjoy on the weekend. The sound circle was new things, all different and moving body and new music. My favourite was rainbow colours with Aaron. Also enjoyed in the group Emma (Blind), Sally (Duck) and Majella (Jelly). I liked workshop. I hope more groups and make bigger for sound circle and make new friends. (Please note words in brackets next to facilitator's names refer to Narelle's sign names for these people.)
Julie: This was my first time at sound circles. I enjoyed meeting Emma, Sally and Majella. I also enjoyed participating in all the sessions. The two days were full of fun and laughter. It was good to see everybody's personalities coming out and being expressed freely. I think the venue helped Narelle and Robyn enjoy the experience too (vibrating floor).
Chia: I thought the weekend was great. The group process became so much clearer and is a beautiful practice to observe and be a part of. Many thanks to Emma, Sally and Majella for their inspiration, encouragement and support and for their grand sense of fun, and to the Caboolture group for their willingness to jump in and have a go. What an awesome team. I learnt a lot and enjoyed myself and had lots of laughs. We all look forward to doing sound circles with the Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast groups.
Outcomes of Queensland Community Foundation
General Fund 2007 Grant Round
The outcomes of Queensland Community Foundation's inaugural grant round have been confirmed. Grants to six organisations have been approved.
The criteria for these grants came from the Philanthropy's Future in the Smart State report to which many of our sub-funders were contributors. The report showed just what was needed in the charity and non profit organisation sector; grants that made a difference and grants with a difference. Alongside the major and minor grants for capital projects the report highlighted a need to support the growth of the core businesses.
Consequently, this year the grants are being given for evaluation of existing programs. Like any sound business there is a need to review and evaluate how a program is going. Is it meeting the need? Is it using the latest technology? Can it be better tailored? All these questions and more help the many organisations in our community provide the quality services and support to those in need.
Access Arts is a proud recipient of this grant with staff members Angela Jaeschke, Peter Vance and Sally Josephson accepting the award on behalf of the organisation on July 25th at the Frances Rush Centre (pictured above with our patron Governor Quentin Bryce). These funds will be used to evaluate Sound Circles.
The other recipients for 2007 are:
Family Planning Queensland - Delivering education on Female Genital Mutilation and improving access to health services for those affected.
Scripture Union Queensland - Providing support and pastoral care through the Chaplaincy Program in Queensland State schools.
SIDS & Kids Queensland - Helping reduce the infant mortality rate by 80% through their Infant Safe Sleeping Education Campaign.
SPIRAL Inc (Supporting People in Respite and Lifestyles) - Supporting adults with intellectual difficulties and complex care needs through training, recreational, volunteering and employment options to enhance their role in the community.
Wildlife Preservation Society Queensland - Preserving the flora and fauna of Queensland, and through education and encouragement raising the community's awareness of the benefits of conservation.
Lost!
Can you help? One of our past artists is looking for some pieces of art which were in the BOA studios. There were three pieces made of wire; a shoe a horse and a hat.
If anyone knows where they are could they please contact Membership Services Officer Julie Jones at Access Arts on 3358 6200.
Performers Wanted!
Imagine the setting sun as a backdrop to your stage, the audience awaiting your performance, and some tasty morsels of food in your belly to boot!
Who could ask for anything more?
Look no further than Access Arts' 2nd Sunset Sounds for the year, to be held on Friday 5th October at the Rooftop Terrace of the Brisbane Powerhouse from 5:30-7:30pm. Admission is $5 - which includes great food plus live entertainment. We are looking for a feature artist and up to five supporting artists to appear.
Feature artists will need to audition for a spot in the program, for which they will receive a payment of $150, whilst supporting acts will have the opportunity to gain experience with a rehearsal period in preparation for the event. Depending on the amount of interest from members, support artists may be asked to audition also, the time and date of which is to be advised.
The performance by the feature artist will run for 40 minutes, in whatever style or genre you like. This can be completely your own, or with the involvement of other Access Arts members as you desire.
The supporting artists will each perform sets between 5-15 minutes. As amateur artists, you will receive the support and coaching necessary to develop a structured and polished performance. This will be delivered by professionally working artists, who are experienced in musical expression and drama, and only too eager to support talented, up and coming artists.
To express an interest, please call Angela or Emma at Access Arts on 07 3358 6200 or 1300 663 651 by September 4th. You can also email Angela at angela@accessarts.org.au

Disability Rights Update - 20th Anniversary of the Human Rights Medal and Awards
The President of the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC), John von Doussa QC, has officially opened nominations for the 2007 Human Rights Medal and Awards.
Since 1987, HREOC has recognised the often extraordinary contribution made to Australian society by a variety of men and women committed to issues of human rights, social justice and equality through these awards.
"The Human Rights Medal and Awards celebrate their 20th anniversary this year and provide an excellent opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding contributions of individuals and organisations by nominating them for these prestigious awards," Mr von Doussa said.
"You don't have to be famous or well known for your efforts to enter - the medal and awards are about celebrating the efforts of those who work tirelessly everyday without fuss to promote and protect human rights and to overcome discrimination in Australia."
Each year HREOC receives outstanding nominations for the Human Rights Medal and award categories of Law, Community (individual and organisation), Arts Non-Fiction, Print Media, Television and Radio.
"Former winners have made an outstanding contribution within their communities or done so through the practice of law, through writing books about human rights issues or through their work in the media," Mr von Doussa said.
To nominate the achievements of an individual or organisation for the 2007 Human Rights Medal or one of the award categories, simply fill in the entry form located at www.humanrights.gov.au/hr_awards or phone 02 9284 9618 and forward supporting material by 5 October, 2007.
But don't just nominate someone, please join us at the gala luncheon ceremony at the Sheraton on the Park in Sydney on Monday, 10 December to hear the winners announced and show your support for the 20th anniversary of these special awards.
Media personality Julie McCrossin will MC the event and Mr von Doussa will deliver the annual Human Rights Day Oration. For information on tickets contact 02 9284 9618 or go to www.humanrights.gov.au/hr_awards
To receive regular updates on the 2007 Awards, ceremony, shortlists and winners, join the Human Rights Awards electronic mailing list - also on the website.

Tell me what it is like to be in heaven and talk to god

Hairdresser's nightmare!
HAIR! It's everywhere! Hair galore! All different colours too!
This is one (1) job which I hate!
I mean (now) c'mon, they could've given me a job that I at least.... Liked!
But, NO, they couldn't, they wouldn't..... (PARTY POOPERS)
It'd be better if I could?..... Cut, perm, style or colour? But, NO, I got the 'cleaning up' job, didn't I?
At least I guess it's better then waxing, hearing all a that screaming, I don't think I'd be able to cope or handle that! On a daily basis too!
The fact that half of it's dirty & the other half's like straw really gets to me. Especially when it's scattered all over the floor,
like today for example 'HAIR' some day's it can be just a nightmare!
It's totally a nightmare when you're right here in front of it day in, day out.
Cleansing, cleaning & painting fingernails well, that's ok I guess? But, 'HAIR', I hate it.
Curly, straight, - all of it, black, brown, red, blonde, Oh no, sorry, my mistake! I love 'HAIR'
but, when it's on your head not and I mean, NOT when it's spread all over the floor.
- Taz! Heard (Sound Circles Facilitator, writer and performer)

Come along to the Frankie Armstrong Workshop!
Frankie Armstrong, acclaimed voice facilitator and professional singer is coming all the way from England to the Brisbane Powerhouse to deliver a voice workshop with Access Arts members, staff and anyone else who is interested.
Frankie's work has been one of the influences which contributed to the development of the Sound Circles program. Frankie believes that singing - expressing ourselves through melodic sounds - is our birthright. Historically we almost certainly sang before we created speech. It has been a way of bringing people together and sharing a wide range of human emotions for tens of thousands of years. Frankie helps us to relax and prepare the body in order to free the voice to play, experiment, explore a range of sounds and yes, sing some simple chants and songs from different parts of the world. It's not necessary to have any previous experience of singing or music, all are welcome. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring an open mind and heart.
When: 1:00-3:00pm, 29th September 2007
Where: Stores Rehearsal Room, Brisbane Powerhouse
Cost: $10
Please let Sally know if you are interested in attending by phoning (07) 3358 6200 or emailing sally@accessarts.org.au.
