Editorial   Return to Newsletter Quick Links

Welcome to the true uptake of our year at Access Arts, for this is where it all begins... Our works in progress, our work in the office, and all our workshops too!!!

We trust you all made it through January...what a wet one it was!! But how we needed the rain....

One cannot complain,
When it comes to the rain,
Hope it pours down again,
For it's never in vain...

Our dams are on the rise, which is a wonderful thing, and we have much on the rise here at Access Arts... such as, you may ask?

As per usual, we'll be filling you in on what workshop's what, and all the important dates for the coming term. We also have a few profiles from members and staff, and share in some poetry from the wonderful Paddy Stoddart.

On the serious side, we speak of our Facilitator and Support Worker Induction Seminar, and Disability Awareness Training, and how important it is in working with our organisation.

We feature a story of immense bravery about a young boy named K'chin, news from the music front with information about APRA, Q Music, and the JB Seed Grant, and we hear what's happening with International Women's Day and Leap Into Life Training.

Finally, in our What's On section, we hear about Community Choir, Swish (a new form of table tennis catering for vision impaired people), and Backbone Theatre - 'Calling All Youth' .

I hope you all enjoy the read; it's the first one I have had the pleasure of being the editor of. How they compile a newspaper every day to print and sell, I'll never know- what an effort!! But it's been worth every moment.

Happy reading...

Karen Lee Roberts - (Membership Services Officer)

Facilitator and Support Worker Induction Seminar   Return to Newsletter Quick Links

On the 2nd of February, Access Arts held their Induction Program, along with Disability Awareness Training. Both these courses are vital in their content as they bring information which makes working in the role of a facilitator or support worker, in particular with people experiencing a disability, a little more defined and understandable. These will be held throughout the year, and we encourage members to attend in view of attaining one of these roles. For more information, please contact Angela Jaeschke on 3358 6200 or email her at angela@accessarts.org.au.

K'chin with his Rotary Award

Ability is the Word   Return to Newsletter Quick Links

Before he left Vietnam, K'chin had not even the money to buy food. Because of injuries sustained as an infant, his leg suffered severe deformation, which resulted in its amputation. But little did he know that this would lead to heights he could never even imagine in his home land...

When he had just turned 13, K'chin, looking poorly, and much younger than his age, was approached by the Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC). To his surprise, amazement, and absolute delight, he was told that they were taking him to Australia to fix his leg!

But what was more astonishing, was what blossomed in the process. K'chin learned to read and write and became an outstanding mathematics student. His intellect came to the forefront, something which may have gone unnoticed if he had never strayed from home.

K'chin recently attended Access Arts' digital storytelling workshop in late 2007, where he wowed us all with his creative talent with the camera and computer as well his dance moves. All at Access Arts thoroughly enjoyed working with him for the 4 weeks and hope to see him again soon!

In honour of his courage, strength, and contribution, K'chin was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow, in memory of the Kenmore and Toowong Rotary Club's founder.

What an incredibly brave journey, and what an inspiration to us all.

Performers Wanted!   Return to Newsletter Quick Links

Imagine the setting sun as a backdrop to your stage, the audience awaiting your performance, and some tasty morsels of food in your belly to boot! Who could ask for anything more?

This is now possible, with Access Arts' Sunset Sounds events, to be held quarterly, with the first to happen on Friday 2nd May 2008 in the Rooftop Terrace at the Brisbane Powerhouse from 5:30-7:30pm, for a cost of just $10 for spectators- which includes great food plus live entertainment.

We are looking for a feature artist and up to five supporting artists to perform for this evening.

Feature artists will need to audition for a spot in the program, for which they will receive some payment, whilst supporting acts will have the opportunity to gain experience with a rehearsal period in preparation for the event. Depending on the amount of interest from members, support artists may be asked to audition also, the time and date of which is to be advised.

The performance by the feature artist will run for 40 minutes, in whatever style or genre you like. This can be completely your own, or with the involvement of other Access Arts members as you desire.

The supporting artists will each perform sets between 5-15 minutes depending on the level of interest we receive and the amount of material potential performers wish to perform. As amateur artists, you will receive the support and coaching necessary to develop a structured and polished performance. This will be delivered by professionally working artists, who are experienced in musical expression and drama, and only too eager to support talented, up and coming artists.

To express interest or to find out more, please contact Angela at Access Arts on 3358 6200 or 1300 663 651 by March 3rd, or by email.

Affirmation 3. 'independence'

My dreams are independent in nature. Although the characters may change, the dream remains the same. My journey shall continue as before ever-flowing and irrepressible. As a river flows to the sea independently regardless of the many obstacles it encounters, it is always possible to redirect my flow of energy. I am now ready to flow with the many unpredictable changes in my life. As with water my nature is irrepressible and continuous. I must follow my dreams regardless of others, for I know that stagnation in any form hinders my progress and retards my vision. From the mountains to the sea and back again via the clouds, the water cycle must continue. So it is with me. My purpose like the water cycle, is ongoing, persistent and self reliant.

'Rainmaker' Workshop on the Sunshine Coast

Circles of Sound   Return to Newsletter Quick Links

Here we see the workshop in action, making beautiful 'Rainmakers'. These are instruments shaped like cylinders, enclosed at both ends, and filled with rice or lentils, beans or buttons - anything which makes a noise. But they cannot simply freefall down their enclosure - on the journey from top to bottom, there are nails or skewers stuck through the tube, breaking their path, so the sound falls in a trickle, slowly moving down as pouring rain.

For anybody who is interested, Sound Circles workshops are run on the Sunshine Coast by Majella Jacobson. Majella can be contacted on (07) 5494 7658 or by email.

International Women's Day   Return to Newsletter Quick Links

The Office for Women encourages all Queensland women to celebrate International Women's Day on Saturday, 8 March 2008. Free publications and resources for community celebrations are available now!

International Women's Day is a time for women to unite and fight for equal opportunity, fair and safe working conditions and a peaceful society. This year the Queensland Government encourages all women to challenge media and society's fixation on the "ideal" body.

The theme 'Queensland Women: Shaping the Future' aims to inspire women and girls to look beyond appearance, and to look into themselves rather than at themselves ; to focus on their achievements rather than their looks.

International Women's Day 2008 resources include an A2 poster, bookmark, sticker sheet, balloons, two postcards and an information sheet on Women and Eating Issues.

But why do we have these problems with our image' Is it the media promoting stick thin glamour girls, looking near anorexic? The fact that aesthetics have become the focus of our lives? Why do we want to be as skinny as can be? Who does it impress, the crowd or our inner selves? There are no real answers to these questions, and those affected by eating disorders and suffering from body image angst are seldom comforted by any wisdom one can give. For these are problems solved only by true inner peace and salvation, and one can only arrive at this point alone.

For more information about International Women's Day, or to order or download resources, please visit www.women.qld.gov.au or call Women's Infolink on 1800 177 577.

Orders received via email or fax cannot be processed.

Celebrate and enjoy International Women's Day 2008!
